Fort Gibson Chamber Fort Gibson, OK, and Fort Gibson Lake

“The oldest town in Oklahoma!”

Standing as a gateway to the west beginning in 1824 – a place where military expeditions launched
their western explorations, where natives and settlers developed the bucolic rolling plains near three life-giving rivers into a small town known for its hospitality and hometown pride.

Long gone are Fort Gibson’s rough and tumble pioneering days, but not all is lost. Today’s Fort Gibson neatly marries the much-loved days of old and exciting days of new. The first Oklahoma town boasting a National Cemetery, Fort Gibson shows its patriotism with the Trail of Honor each Veterans Day and Memorial Day – a breathtaking display of American flags all along our streets thanks to our American Legion Post #20 and local Boy Scout Pack and Troop #638. You’ll see our elementary school students along the route to the cemetery take a knee on the playground in honor of passing funeral processions as veterans are brought to their honored resting place, and the Pledge of Allegiance is still recited in every classroom and before every family-friendly event in town.

A replica of the old stockade still awaits visitors, and the original barracks, stone oven and hospital still overlook the river valley above the Verdigris. Civil War reenactments and school field trips to see living history demonstrations are part of the highlights at the old fort. Don’t miss baking day at the old fort twice a year – the smell of fresh baked bread is a delicious aroma to explore the fort with – and you can take some of that bread home with you. Just minutes down the road is a newly revitalized downtown featuring historical buildings and beautiful architecture from the days of old, filled with modern, upscale stores and eateries for all to enjoy. Fort Gibson hosts a variety of events throughout the year, which are always enjoyed by visitors from across the country. The Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce hosts the Smokin’ the Fort BBQ & Bluegrass Festival each October in the crossroads of downtown – an area filled with antique stores, gift shops, and eateries, plus a beautiful green space and gazebo for gatherings. The chamber also plays host to the annual Fort Gibson Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show each June – a family-fun event with cool cars and the all-time town favorite “burnout contest.”
